Alberta Health Care Services
All new and returning eligible Alberta residents must register for the Alberta Health Care coverage to receive insured hospital and physician services.
When you move to Alberta from another province or country, there may be a waiting period before you become eligible for coverage under the Alberta Health Care Insurance Program.
How to register for Alberta Health Care – necessary documents
When you apply for Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) coverage, you must provide supporting documents that prove:
1. Alberta residency
The document must show your name and current Alberta address, which must be the same as on the application:
- current Alberta driver’s licence
- current Alberta identification card
- current utility bill with Alberta residence address
- a current pay stub, bank statement or lease agreement may be submitted as proof of Alberta residency
AND
2. Government issued photo identification
The document must be government issued identification (ID) which shows your photo, name and birth date:
- Canadian/Non-Canadian passport
- Canadian citizenship card
- Permanent Resident Card
- federal identification card
- current Alberta, provincial or territorial driver’s licence

AND
3. Legal entitlement to be in Canada
The document must be identification which shows your name and birth date:
- Canadian passport
- Canadian citizenship card
- Canadian birth certificate
- Permanent Resident Card
- Canada entry document (Study Permit, Work Permit, etc.)
If these original documents are not provided, an application cannot be processed.

When you have all necessary documents, bring them into our registry office along with the completed application form.
Processing time can take up to 6 weeks.

- Proof of Age
- When an Alberta resident reaches 65 years of age, the resident and all eligible dependants automatically qualify for premium-free Alberta Blue Cross Coverage for Seniors.
- In order to be registered, seniors must provide proof of being 65 years of age or older such as a birth certificate, old age pension entitlement, passport, immigration record, or naturalization or citizenship certificate. Seniors who have submitted their proof of age declaration and been approved are eligible.
